In its early years UCLA was dubbed “the twig,” an offshoot of the University of California created to serve the state’s rapidly growing population. The sapling took hold, each graduating class strengthening the roots boring deep into the bedrock. Every breakthrough, discovery and stride fortified the trunk and sent its branches skyward. And as UCLA’s alumni, faculty and students made their mark in the world they loaded each bough with magnificent leaves of accomplishment, flowers of wisdom and the sweet fruit of hope. UCLA Alumni Day will commemorate our first hundred years and anticipate the endlessly bright possibilities of the future.
UCLA - a twig no more.
Come back to campus and celebrate with fellow Bruins. Reconnect with friends and enjoy a panoply of engaging performances, sessions and tours.

Other Centennial Weekend Events
The UCLA Centennial Weekend at a Glance
UCLA’s Centennial Celebration will be a 14-month series of events, programs and initiatives taking place at UCLA, throughout Los Angeles and around the world. On Friday and Saturday, May 17-18 four events will usher in the season. Spring Sing, a fifty-year student tradition of comedy, dance and song will lead the way on Friday night followed by Alumni Day and TEDxUCLA on Saturday. Capping off the evening will be a breathtaking display of light and sound that will be shown after Friday and Saturday night’s events.
Centennial Weekend Event
Spring Sing
In 1945, right before the close of World War II, UCLA fraternities began the custom of serenading sorority sisters. It wasn’t long before there was a difference of opinion as to whose group was the best. The gauntlet was thrown, and the challenge was accepted. That year, ASUCLA director William Ackerman arranged for the first Spring Sing competition to be held in Royce Hall with 11 groups competing. Over the years the singing competition moved to a now demolished open-air theater on campus, the Hollywood Bowl, Pauley Pavilion and the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Back in Pauley, tickets are on sale now.
Centennial Weekend Event
TEDxUCLA
As UCLA reflects on its first century and accelerates into its second TEDxUCLA proudly presents the theme TIME. Awe-inspiring talks and adventures will be crafted to engage the mind and challenge paradigms as an exploration of the idea of time.
